In a commendable initiative marking its Ruby Jubilee celebrations, the Thamarassery Diocese has embraced waste management as a way of life, setting a strong example in environmental conservation. As part of the diocese’s month-long environmental observance, awareness campaigns and practical waste management efforts have been launched across its parishes and institutions.
To promote the segregation of waste at the source, green bins for biodegradable waste and red bins for non-biodegradable waste have been distributed to all churches under the diocese. This structured approach aims to encourage parishioners to adopt responsible waste disposal habits and foster a sustainable lifestyle.
“Managing waste in a way that does not harm the environment must become a part of our daily life. Segregating biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste and processing them properly must evolve into a cultural practice. We must also discourage littering in public spaces and support the government’s plastic waste elimination efforts,” said Bishop Mar Remigiose Inchananiyil of the Thamarassery Diocese.
The Bishop further emphasized the importance of home-level waste management, encouraging households to install compost pits and biogas plants to handle biodegradable waste efficiently.
As part of the environmental month observed in June, the Diocese also plans to promote large-scale tree planting. On June 1st, all parishes will ceremoniously plant a "Jubilee Tree" as a symbolic launch of the Diocese’s environmental protection campaign.
The Ruby Jubilee environmental initiatives are being led by Jubilee Coordinator Fr. John Oravunkara and Alphonsa School Principal Fr. Jilson Thayyil, highlighting the Diocese’s commitment to building an eco-conscious community.
