An International Education Colloquium examining the challenges and opportunities of Christian education and faith formation in the digital age was held today at the campus of START (St Thomas Academy for Research and Training), Kozhikode.
The colloquium was organised under the theme “Education Towards Excellence in the Digital Age: Faith Formation, Christian Education, and Global–Kerala Perspectives.” Academicians, church leaders, and education experts from India and abroad participated in the deliberations.
The event was inaugurated by Mar Remigiose Inchananiyil, Bishop of the Thamarassery Diocese. In his inaugural address, he highlighted the mission of Christian education in forming individuals grounded in faith, character, and excellence in the context of rapid digital transformation.
The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Dr. Kees Schipper, associated with Aeres University of Applied Sciences, the Netherlands, and the University of Angers, France. He discussed the challenges faced by faith formation in a digital, secular, and multicultural world and outlined key insights and lessons for Christian education.
Rev. Fr. Sabin Thoomullil spoke on pastoral responsibilities in the digital age, with special reference to the Indian Christian educational context. This was followed by experience-sharing sessions by Dr. George Paimpillil (Netherlands), Monsignor Gerard Brugink, Dr. Chacko Kalambarampil, spokesperson of the Syro-Malabar Church, and Rev. Sr. Jennifer Dominic, who shared perspectives from global and regional contexts.
Welcoming the gathering, Fr. Dr. Subin Kizhakkeveettil, Director of START, emphasised the importance of integrating technological knowledge and skills acquired by children with fundamental human and moral values to ensure holistic development. He noted that neither technology nor skills can replace enduring values and reiterated the view that education without values is ultimately meaningless.
The colloquium concluded with an interactive discussion and question-and-answer session, followed by a vote of thanks. Eminent personalities from the education sector participated in the event.
