Catholic Mental Health Ministry Launched in Thamarassery Diocese

News

In a significant step toward promoting mental well-being and supporting individuals facing psychological challenges, the Catholic Mental Health Ministry has been officially launched at the diocesan level in Thamarassery. The inaugural function was held on Saturday, May 2, at Alphonsa Hall in the Thamarassery Diocesan Centre.

The initiative was inaugurated by Bishop Mar Remigiose Inchananiyil, who emphasized the urgent need to address mental health concerns in society, particularly the growing issue of suicide. He noted that the ministry aims to extend care, compassion, and support to those experiencing emotional and mental distress, regardless of caste or religion. The Bishop also called upon the community to work together in fostering hope and healing among those in need.

This initiative is part of the Association of Catholic Mental Health Ministry functioning under the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CBCI). The ministry seeks to provide both spiritual and practical support to individuals dealing with mental health challenges.

As part of its activities, the ministry will focus on creating awareness to eliminate misconceptions about mental health, offering counselling and support services, and guiding individuals toward professional treatment when necessary.

The project is being implemented in collaboration with the John Paul Institute of Mental Health, Marykunnu, Kozhikode. The institute will also provide training programs for those interested in serving in this field.

Fr. Kurian Puramattam, Director of the Mental Health Ministry in the Thamarassery Diocese, presided over the function. Fr. Subin Kavalakkatt (Chancellor), Fr. Sai Parankulangara, and Fr. Joji were also present.

The launch of the Catholic Mental Health Ministry is seen as a meaningful initiative that strengthens the Church’s social commitment in the field of mental health care.
